Kit Review

2. Inner Frame
Arm frame. Most MGs tend to have pretty plain arm frames,
but the Gelgoog ver.2.0's arm frame feels quite refined.
There are verniers inside the frame, and yet another frame inside those.
What incredible detail..
Double frames are becoming synonymous with high-quality kits.
If you remove just the outer armor and attach it, you get this mesh-like frame shape.
Pretty cool and fun.. ^^ Aka the "mesh skirt frame" ;
Full body shot with the mesh frames on the skirt and legs exposed.
The lattice-style double frame was also seen on the MG Ball, but this seems to be the first time it's been applied to an MS.
3. Weapons &
Accessories
The Gelgoog's beam sabers are stored on the back by default..
The back mounting parts have been updated to a newer style here,
a fixing pin slots into a groove on the saber handle, giving it a much more secure hold.
A quirky connection gimmick has been added to the shield, which is used when mounting the shield on the back.
That odd articulated connector links up to the body as shown,
giving a pretty wide and varied range of motion.
On the 1.0, holding the shield in the hand was practically im·pos·si·ble.
The handle was flimsy, the grip strength was terrible, and the shield was heavy..
On the 2.0, a reinforcing plate has been added to the handle section, making it reasonably manageable to hold.
However, due to the structure attached to the forearm, there are some angular limitations when gripping the shield.
The point of the shield's connection gimmick is to allow you to naturally draw the shield from the back and grab it by hand, just like this.
If you think about it.. in an actual battle, how would you even detach a shield from your back?
Just ejecting it and then quickly snatching it as it flies off would look pretty silly.. -_-
That's probably why they added this kind of setup. The gimmick on the back moves, bringing the shield into position behind the left arm,
so the left hand can immediately grab the shield handle. It's a pretty clever gimmick. :-)
4. Articulation
Why does the knee articulation only go an honest 90 degrees?!?
I thought I had assembled it wrong. *ahem*..
But nope, that's just how it was designed. You can't help but find that a little puzzling..
Instead, they added a neat gimmick where the front knee structure separates in a linked fashion.
And the back of the knee has a slide-type joint.
It's precisely because of this slide joint gimmick that the knee's own articulation is directly limited.
For a kit as big as the Char's Gelgoog ver.2.0.. I wonder if they wanted to emphasize the gimmicks over dynamic posing? Hmm........
One of the key features of the Char's Gelgoog ver.2.0 — the individually articulated skirts.
It feels similar to the MG Zaku 2.0, but when closed up, the panels line up a bit more neatly.
Like pretty much all of Bandai's recent kits, the fingers are individually split so you can convert them to full articulation.
Just like the Zaku 2.0, each finger has one movable knuckle joint,
and the detail, joint strength, and overall look are all great. :-)
You really need to look at it in frame-only state or with the head cover open to see the linked gimmick clearly.
5. Action Poses
The limited range of motion in the knees and hip joints..
means crouching only gets you this far. There's no way you could do your business comfortably in that position.. (Hey.. hey!)
A cocky pose to show off the leg articulation.
A bit disappointing T_T. I was hoping for something more dynamic..
A drawing pose using the shield connection gimmick.
When you bend the ankle sideways a lot, the leg armor tends to naturally start spreading apart.
The beam naginata.. it's probably the coolest-looking weapon in the Char's Gelgoog ver.2.0's arsenal.
As expected, the Char's Gelgoog ver.2.0's beam sabers — which plug in from both sides — are just too long to look good or photograph easily;
A separate adapter part is included for connecting to the Action Base 1.
But the connection is pretty flimsy — tilt it at an angle and the kit falls off all the time.
They could've just made a proper hole to plug it into.. instead, it's this half-baked part that just sits on top with a slight clip,
and that's supposed to support the entire hip joint of the Char's Gelgoog ver.2.0.. The holding strength is really bad. -_-;
6. Comparison with v1.0
Comparison with the 1.0. Looking at them side by side like this, the 1.0's molded color definitely looks a bit.. cheap T_T
They're both the same dodgy sausage shape, but the color difference is significant — the matte, subdued sausage color of the 2.0 is clearly better.
The molded color on the normal Char's Gelgoog ver.1.0 really does look like something out of a food toy;
Close-up comparison of the front and rear torso.
Compared to the 1.0's body which flared out toward the bottom, the 2.0's torso feels more balanced top to bottom.
Zoom in and take a good look at how the panel lines have changed..
Arm comparison. The shoulders look slightly smaller,
and on the 2.0, the use of one-piece armor means the seam lines are gone.
As the arrow in the right photo shows, the shoulder duct on the 2.0 is color separated through parts separation.
On the 1.0, the shoulder duct just came in the same color as the shoulder — the photo above has been partially hand-painted.
Leg comparison. You can see a major overhaul of the panel lines, and the inner frame.. is night and day. ^^;
If you peel back one layer of the 2.0's double frame, they start to look juuust a little similar.
The vernier detail is also quite different.
The 2.0's shield has been changed to a slightly bluer molded color..
The biggest difference is that even the inside of the shield now has color separation.
More than that, though, the way it attaches and the overall holding strength have improved dramatically.
The 1.0's shield was practically impossible to hold in the hand — it was a total nuisance.. T_T (back-mount only...)
