Kit Review
Straight build + Panel lining + Seals
Part 1 : Unicorn Mode
Comparison with the Unicorn Mode of the existing MG Unicorn Gundam [OVA version] (left).
It's bulked up a bit overall and looks slightly more built.
Probably had to beef it up to fit the LED unit inside.
The LEDs lit up by connecting to the stand with the battery unit.
Even under bright lighting, the LED light leaks through the gaps in the armor.
Part 2 : MS Cage
Compared to the existing
MG Unicorn Gundam HD Color VersionMS cage (left),
The crane and pillars are the same, but the base plate and the parts connecting to the upper crane are larger.
Unicorn Mode placed inside the cage.
Destroy Mode doesn't fit well because the shoulder height doesn't match.
Unicorn Mode placed inside the fully opened cage.
Also arranged the included 1/100 figures around the scene.
Part 3 : Weapons & Accessories
Compared to the existing MG Unicorn beam rifle, the exterior looks the same,
but the entire rear section indicated by the circles has actually been replaced with new parts.
They're parts to improve magazine retention — the old problem of the magazine being loose and falling out has been fixed.
One new part has been added to secure the rear magazine of the bazooka.
The bazooka also used to have a loose magazine that fell out easily, but applying the new part with the added peg holds it firmly in place.
However, when you want to remove the bazooka magazine and fold it up, you'll need to use the original part.
Three types of hands are included, but the fully articulated finger hands still have fingers that pop off easily, making them a pain to use. T_T
Interestingly, two cockpit front panel variants are included — one for Unicorn Mode (left) and one for Destroy Mode (right).
It's not even a position you can easily see, but it's a pretty detailed touch.
Part 4 : Transformation
The head transformation mechanism itself is similar to before,
but the connection point between the Unicorn Mode and Destroy Mode faces has been reversed compared to the original (top and bottom).
The problem is that when stowing the Unicorn Mode face inside, you have to fold it behind the wiring as shown in the manual —
and that's easier said than done... T_T
If you don't position everything precisely as shown in the manual, there won't be enough internal space and the top head cover won't come down far enough.
Forcing it down risks breaking parts, so you really need to carefully follow the manual and get the Unicorn Mode face properly seated inside.
After trying various approaches, it seems like temporarily detaching the head from the body before transforming it works best.
Either way, I think a lot of people are going to feel pretty lost right from the head transformation — so take it slow and easy... (it's an expensive kit T_T)
Just like before, open the fixing pin on the back and pull the upper body upward while twisting it slightly side to side.
If you grab the upper body and yank it straight up, or try to pull it out too far,
there's a good chance the internal locking pin will pop out -_-
It's a real pain to get back in,
so when extending the waist, please twist it side to side and pull it out gradually, little by little, like in the photo above.
The locking pin on the inside of this wing structure can secure the knee's psycho-frame.
When you pull out the knee psycho-frame, it clicks into place at the end,
and with the side wings holding it in as well, it locks in really solidly.
This completely fixes the old problem where it would pop back in at the slightest touch,
and the front knee armor's retention has also been improved.
The feet use the same transformation method as before, but it's become easier overall.
The white covers on the sides of the feet now move individually on ball joints on both sides,
which makes the transformation easier and also gives the ankle a wider range of motion.
Part 5 : Destroy Mode
Detail shots.
Because of the LED lighting, the psycho-frame is made of a clear material, so it looks a bit washed-out and pale.
Alongside the MG Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka from 2007.
Compared to Unicorn Mode, the proportional differences aren't that noticeable.
Alongside the PG Unicorn Gundam.
In person, the MGEX actually feels like it has richer and more intense light output.
