G Gundam ~ Hyper Mode

Kit Review

Straight build

The MG God Gundam has been released in a Hyper Mode version. In Mobile Fighter G Gundam, Hyper Mode basically just means the whole body glows gold — so this kit ends up being not much different from a standard plated release. In other words, there are no new molds or even new stickers; just some molded color changes and gold plating on the outer armor. It's essentially a bonus MG variant. Since the overall contents are the same as the regular MG God Gundam, for a structural review please refer to the MG God Gundam review for details.

The quality of the gold plating looks pretty impressive from a distance, but up close under bright light it gets a bit iffy. Under the right lighting it does sparkle nicely.. but shine a light on it up close and the coating looks uneven and slightly blotchy. It's not terrible, but compared to the relatively smooth and subtle plating on the MG Hyaku-Shiki, the God Gundam feels a step below. Also, since the entire body is plated — and in gold no less — fingerprints show up like crazy. On the bright side, they wipe off easily with a soft cloth, but you'll definitely want to be careful handling it with bare hands.

One thing about plated kits is that the coating quality isn't always consistent from kit to kit. So there's a bit of a lottery factor involved — best not to get your hopes up too high. ^^ That said, viewed from a reasonable distance, it really is blindingly brilliant. Since the entire body is wrapped in gold, it's even more dazzling than the MG Hyaku-Shiki.

As is typical with plated kits, the joints are noticeably stiffer than the original. The God Gundam was already pretty stiff to begin with, and with the added coating layer on the plastic surfaces, the polycap and joint tolerances have gotten even tighter. Sure, it holds any pose rock-solid, but it's almost too stiff — making it genuinely difficult to get it into the pose you want.

Unfortunately, under-gates weren't used, so gate marks are inevitably left all over the body — but the gold shine is so intense that, strangely enough, the gate marks are barely noticeable. There are tons of gate marks in the photos above, but unless you're actively hunting for them, they don't really catch the eye. A silver lining, at least.
On top of that, the Hyper Mode Master Gundam released afterward did use under-gates, which makes this one look relatively lacking by comparison ;;;

As a straight build, it's a pretty decent kit.. but the ¥4,500 price tag does sting a bit. Still, for fans of God Gundam and G Gundam, this should make for a pretty great addition to the collection :-)
