Rick-Dom ~ Coating & Clear version

Kit Review

Straight build

Generally speaking, event/limited edition kits tend to be mostly plated versions, with the occasional clear version. And then there are unique limited editions like this kit, which combine both plating and clear materials.

This MG Rick-Dom Coating & Clear version is a premium limited edition where the inner frame is done in a brilliantly shiny plated coating, and the outer armor is molded in clear material. On top of the inner frame, the chest section is also plated, and the reflectivity is outstanding — it boasts a mirror-like surface.

The real charm of the Coating & Clear version is seeing the plated frame through the transparent armor. The arms didn't have a frame to begin with, so they just look plain clear, but the legs on this kit are nothing short of ART. The molds that were engraved on the inside of the outer armor are now visible from the outside thanks to the clear material, so the intricate sense of depth on the legs is really something. And on top of that, you can see the gleaming inner frame shining through — it's the cherry on top! Either way, the unique and premium feel of the legs alone makes this a limited edition well worth having.

As is typical with plated/clear kits, the tolerances between the joints and polycaps tighten up, making everything stiffer overall compared to the normal version. So whatever pose you put it in, it holds firm — even holding that massive beam bazooka up high.

One thing to watch out for: clear material tends to be harder and more brittle, meaning it breaks easily under impact. In other words, it's less flexible. So when you're removing the outer armor panels, if you force it too hard, the armor can crack or snap — and it happens more often than you'd think. Actually, somewhere on the kit above, something did snap while I was taking the armor off. If you're bored, see if you can spot it... T_T/

Either way, this is a top-tier premium piece, even among limited editions. :-)
