MG FXA-05D G-Defenser with RX-178

Super Gundam ~ Clear & Coating version

Kit Review

Straight build

The MG Super Gundam has come out as a limited edition with a clear + plating combo. It shares the same concept as the Rick Dom clear + plating limited edition, but it differs in that the inner frame is a bit less substantial than the Rick Dom's, and the entire body exterior except for the backpack is done in clear. The Rick Dom limited edition used plated surfaces on the body as well, so it was finished with a combination of gloss and clear.

One thing that immediately stands out is the stiffer joints. The existing MG Mk-II and Super Gundam had a lot of complaints about weak ankles and legs. (The Mk-II used in this kit is the 1.0 version, of course.) With the G-Defenser mounted on the back in particular, it could barely stand on its own or ended up in really awkward poses. But just like how clear/plated versions tend to get stiffer due to tighter polycap tolerances, the joints on this kit have tightened up nicely, so it stands up straight and solid even with the G-Defenser on its back. It finally feels like a proper "Super Gundam." Thanks to that, it can pull off decent action poses and display stably.

The G-Defenser, which is almost entirely in clear, doesn't look too bad at all. The clear armor on the body looks good too — especially since the inner detail molding shows through so well, giving the impression of a really intricate kit. The Rick Dom limited edition showed some inner detail too, but it wasn't nearly as dense as the Mk-II's.

You can't help but compare it to the similar Rick Dom coating + clear limited edition, and in terms of overall quality and feel, the Rick Dom limited edition comes out ahead. The Mk-II coating + clear version has pretty solid quality overall, but unlike the Rick Dom, there's just something washed-out about it. And the base kit quality itself is fundamentally better on the Dom too.

Still, as one of the rare kits where you can actually see the plated frame through the clear outer armor, it seems to have plenty of value as a limited edition. You get a lot of parts for the price, the volume is impressive, and hey — you get to own a clear version Mk-II. :-)
