Gyan ~ Extra Finish version

Kit Review

Straight build

The MG Gyan Extra Finish version was released as a Char's Hobby 2006 exclusive. Unlike regular plating, the Extra Finish coating aims for a more sophisticated look — a semi-gloss finish with a pearly, metallic feel. The coating on the MG Gyan Extra Finish is a bit ambiguous as Extra Finish versions go: the dark iron and blue sections have a metallic/pearl coating, but the light blue areas on the body are done in a semi-gloss coating with a greenish tint. So it feels a little hard to categorize as a proper Extra Finish version, but since Bandai released it as one, I guess that's what it is ^^;

For the basic kit's features, MG Gyan Reviewplease check that out.. Nothing has been structurally changed — it's just had a coating applied. Normally with plated limited editions, only the armor parts get coated, but on this kit, the chest and some leg frame pieces ended up getting coated as well. It wasn't intentional — it's just that the frame pieces happened to be on the same runner as the armor parts being coated..

Overall the coating quality is excellent, and the dark iron metallic coating in particular looks really great. The body coating isn't bad either, but personally I'm not a big fan of that slightly lackluster greenish tint on the body. I think it would've looked so much cooler with a light blue metallic coating that matched the original design concept.

The previous MG Gyan already had somewhat weak joint strength relative to its otherwise excellent frame and structure, and the Extra Finish version is no different. Normally when a kit gets a plated release, the thin layer added over the plastic surfaces naturally tightens up the joints and makes them stiffer. But this MG Gyan Extra Finish seems to be an exception — it didn't get noticeably stiffer compared to the original, and the joints still feel a bit loose. It's not so bad that it'll topple over on its own, but when posing it, if you don't balance the weight carefully it tends to lean to one side. The heavy left shield gradually drooping to the left is exactly the same as before

I was secretly hoping the joints would be tighter with the plated release, so that's a bit of a letdown. And the beam saber light-up section that needed a bit of tweaking due to poor contact is still the same as ever..

Anyway, despite being called a limited edition, it was officially imported to Korea in early 2007 and ended up being orderable from most online shops just like a regular release, so it doesn't really feel all that limited.. That said, it's not something that'll get a reprint, so if you're a Gyan fan, it's worth grabbing one while you can. :-)
