MG RX-78-3

Gundam G3 ver.O.Y.W.

Kit Review

Straight build
+ panel lining + stickers

This was released as a 2008 Summer Wonder Festival limited edition — a Gundam G3 based on the MG Gundam Ver. O.Y.W. 0079. Honestly, it probably would've sold pretty well even as a regular release.. Anyway, like most recent MG limited editions, you can tell they put more care into the manual and stickers compared to the simpler limited releases of the past. It comes with the existing anime color manual, plus a separate color supplemental manual and brand-new G3-exclusive stickers.

The MG Gundam Ver. O.Y.W. 0079 base kit does show some shortcomings by today's standards — things like the hip joint articulation leave a bit to be desired...
But its reputation is well-earned — it's clearly a pretty excellent kit. ^^ The build feel is great, the joints are solid, and the articulation is decent too..

The G3's defining feature is its slightly weighty, subdued coloring, and it's pulled off nicely here. Compared to the MG First 1.0 G3, the molded color is a touch brighter.

The MG Gundam Ver. O.Y.W. 0079 is best known for its elaborate panel lines, and this time I went ahead and tried brown panel lining. I'd done dark panel lining on the normal MG Gundam Ver. O.Y.W. 0079 and light panel lining on the anime color version, so I wanted to try something new — but it's a bit ambiguous whether it really works or not ^^; I used the brown Gundam Marker for panel lining, and compared to the black one it goes on in a more even tone, which made the panel lining process feel a bit easier. The black Gundam Marker tends to go on heavy in some spots and light in others, so the tone ends up a little inconsistent.

Anyway, this is a limited edition that doesn't really need much more explanation. Enjoy the photos ^^
