MG MS-06J

Zaku J v2.0 ~ Kawaguchi produce version

Kit Review

Straight build
+ panel lining + decals

The second Pro Shop limited is a color variant kit of the Zaku II Type J v2.0. Also going by the name Kawaguchi Produce Version, it's a kit with changed molded colors and added waterslide decals. The color scheme has that yellowish desert-unit feel, though it's officially defined as an Africa combat specification. That's why the decals printed on the chest and shield are shaped like a map of Africa.

The yellowish tone is deeper than any other similar kit out there — it almost gives off a coffee-brown vibe. If you check out the comparison shots with other yellow-toned kits, you can easily see just how different the color is. Either way, the color itself is bold and vivid, so it looks great.

The included waterslide decals come with all sorts of different markings, but the number actually instructed to go on the kit is pretty small. So compared to the First v1.5 Pro Shop limited, it doesn't take nearly as long to apply them. Still, waterslide decals are really the highlight of any Pro Shop limited, and the difference between applying them and not is pretty significant.. (especially on the shield)

One more thing — this kit unusually comes with a bonus full runner of MG Kämpfer weapons. Not sure why, but it seems like it's just a freebie. Since the Kämpfer and the Zaku were both active in the same era, the weapons do match up well enough — but since the MG Kämpfer is a bit of an older kit, the palm pegs aren't compatible, so the grip is pretty loose. It's hard to keep them in hand..
Still, just grateful for the bonus.

Unfortunately, since this limited edition came out before the First 2.0 was released, it makes for an awkward pairing — the First at v1.5 and the Zaku at v2.0. Just built and sitting on a shelf they might look like a similar level of quality, but once you handle them, the difference is pretty noticeable.

Either way, this kit is significant in that it marks the beginning of limited edition releases for the MG Zaku 2.0, which is one of the best kits out there. :-)
