Gundam Ground Type : Camouflage Forrest Type A

Kit Review

Straight build

The crown jewel of the set and the ultimate limited edition — it's the Gundam Ground Type Camouflage 9-kit set. This was a limited release sold exclusively at the hobby show venue (though of course they all end up circulating outside). There are 9 kits in total — 3 forest types, 3 desert types, and 3 arctic types — each with a different camouflage paint scheme. And it's not coating or clear — the armor runner parts are literally painted right out of the box.

Sure, some of you painters out there might say "I can just airbrush camo like this myself, no big deal!" — and fair enough, but regardless, this kind of pre-painted limited edition exists as something distinct from coated, clear, or molded color variants. ~^^ And the quality of the camo paint is really impressive. I'm not sure if it was done by hand or machine, but the pattern is relatively consistent while still having that irregular, organic feel — it's done quite cleverly.

On top of that, one of the biggest selling points of the Gundam Ground Type Camouflage series is that all the armor parts are molded in the base color of each respective camo scheme — so gate marks are much less noticeable. Even after clipping the gates on those multi-colored armor pieces, the marks blend right into the base color and don't stand out much. It's not perfect — you can still spot them if you look closely — but it's a really thoughtful touch. ^^;

All other basic characteristics of the kit are completely identical to the existing normal version,
so for more detailed photos of the inner frame and such, please refer to the MG Gundam Ground Type Reviewfor reference.

The kit featured above is the Forest Type A version from this 9-kit set — one of what you might call the "frog suit" versions. It's probably the closest thing to the Korean military's frog camo pattern out of any of the schemes. ^^ Since almost everything except parts of the chest and feet is covered in camouflage paint, the overall vibe is completely different from the normal version.

One thing that's a bit odd — each of these limited kits comes with an extra sticker sheet that lets you add more camo markings. But after opening all 9 kits in the set... the camo stickers inside don't match the actual camo scheme of the kit they came with;; It's not really useful getting the wrong camo sticker in the first place, and it's hard to write it off as a simple mistake since every single kit has them mixed up — and it doesn't even look like all the sticker types are evenly distributed. From what I can tell, there seem to be about 3 different sticker types spread across the set, so it looks like they just tossed them in randomly.

All things considered, this is a meaningful limited edition that combines excellent paint quality with solid kit quality across the board. Given the nature of this limited release, I think the photos speak for themselves more than any amount of description ever could. ^^
