20th Anniversary Gundam Chara Colle box

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the Gundam Chara Colle box released in 1998 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Gundam. It's a compilation of the 10 Gundam figure model kits that were originally released individually back in 1981, all bundled into a single box — and this time they came out as a clear version with transparent plastic.

So the contents are identical to the originals in every way, the only difference being that the plastic is now clear. They have a transparent, luminous feel to them, though the details and sculpting aren't exactly easy to make out. They're more meaningful as glowing silhouettes, but shine some light on them and they actually look pretty cool with a nice sparkle to them.

For reference, while the contents themselves are simply a clear plastic version, the individual box designs have been subtly changed. The box art illustrations are the same, but the font colors have been updated, and the images on the back manual have been replaced with new ones. The side panels have also been generally redesigned into a new look — it's interesting that they went out of their way to make changes specifically to the box art.

Anyway, with a retail price of ¥1000 and used prices not being too steep either, the display value for the money seems pretty decent. If you're a Gundam fan, this seems like a kit worth building at least once as a commemorative piece. :-)
