PG Unicorn - LED Unit Assembly Process
First, insert 4 AA batteries into the battery pack
and connect all the LEDs to check that everything works properly.
The switch has 2 stages —
flip the right switch to ON, then use the left button to cycle through the different lighting modes.
On the head, there's a white LED for the eyes and a red LED for the psycho-frame.
Press the round button once and only the eyes light up; press it a second time and the entire psycho-frame lights up;
a third press lights up both the eyes and the full psycho-frame, and a fourth press turns everything off.
First, disassemble the head like this to install the LEDs.
Slot the LED PCB into the back of the face.
Attach the face to the head frame, then route the wires straight back, splitting them evenly down the middle.
Then reassemble the armor pieces in order.
After assembly, you'll notice the LED connector pin is slightly exposed at the back of the head —
but it's recessed so far in that it's really hard to plug in like this.
When connecting the power pin, it's much easier to pop off the back of the head first.
Testing to make sure the assembly is all good..
To install the LEDs in the arms, first disassemble them as shown above.
Then remove one of the elbow armor pieces to run the wires through the inside.
You'll also need the square psycho-frame parts on the forearm.
Alright, now let's install the LED unit into the arm..
First, fit the LED unit into the square opening, then loop the wire around to the back once to secure it.
Fit this into the forearm, then tuck and stuff the wire into the groove on the inside of the forearm to hide it.
Then cleverly route the wires through the inside of the joint as shown.
Close the elbow cover to lock everything in place.
Apply red stickers on both the front and back of where the LED unit sits
to help spread the glow effect.
Test to make sure the wires don't interfere with the arm's movement.
Then reassemble the arm in order.
Thread the end of the wire through the hole in the middle of the shoulder,
then fit the LED unit inside the shoulder.
Since the excess wire tends to flop around messily,
first secure it by threading it through the 2 fixing holes at the bottom.
To accommodate the shoulder's range of motion while keeping the wire length in check,
bend the two wires in opposite directions on the inside as shown — that way they stay nicely hidden.
Connect the wires and check that the LEDs light up properly.
To install the LEDs in the legs, separate the feet and armor as shown above.
Then disassemble the inner frame one more time as shown above.
Now install the LED unit.
First, separate the connecting pin between the knee frame and the calf frame to spread the joint wide open.
Push the middle LED unit deep into the inside of the knee frame.
Then secure the wires to the rings on the inside of the joint..
Following the manual, secure the wires into the grooves on the inside of the knee frame.
Since it's a spot your fingers can't reach, it's easier to use the tip of a screwdriver to push them in.
Next, reattach the knee frame and calf frame back together.
The LED unit at the end gets tucked into the hole at the front above the ankle.
Next, route the wires into the various grooves and rings as shown above.
Then put the knee joint cover back on..
Secure the additional wires as shown above, then plug the LED unit into the middle of the thigh.
Finally, secure everything so the LED units and wires are positioned as shown above.
Now just reattach the frame and armor parts one by one.
Time to do a light-up test to make sure the LEDs are working properly~
Then remove the lower body armor as shown above,
thread the leg LED cord through the hole at the bottom of the waist,
then attach the hip joint.
Now it's time to install the lower body LED unit.
Tuck the central LED unit into the hole at the back of the rear end,
then connect the connectors on both sides to the leg sockets.
Stuff the combined leg connector bundle into the hole at the bottom of the waist so it doesn't get in the way,
stuff it into the hole at the bottom of the waist,
then neatly route the wires through the securing holes as shown on the upper right.
For now, close up the cover armor to hold everything in place..
Each of the 6 skirts gets its own LED unit,
and there are separate parts included in the PG Unicorn kit itself to secure them.
Use the additional cover parts like this to secure the LED unit inside the rear skirt.
Do the same for the side skirts and front skirts —
secure the LED units using the separate cover parts.
Once you attach the skirts, the wires stick out all over the place and look pretty messy.
You can wrap the wires once around the skirt mounting pins, or stuff them into the empty space below the legs
to hide them out of sight.
Finally, disassemble the armor to install the LED units in the upper body.
You also need to remove the black cover part on the back,
and you have to spread both shoulders apart first before pulling it off, otherwise it won't come out cleanly.
The manual does explain this,
but I nearly broke it myself by absentmindedly trying to pull it off while the kit was in Unicorn Mode with the shoulders in their narrow position..
Now let's get those LED units installed~
The large central LED unit plugs in below the neck,
and the small LED unit goes in behind the cockpit.
Then, referring to the manual, arrange and fit the wires into the various cable clips as shown above.
Next, clip in the black parts on the back to secure the wires, then cover it all up with the white armor.
For the neck parts, feed the wire through the groove at the back and secure it by pulling the connector out through the inside of the neck.
Now connect the upper and lower body connectors together.
However, in this state the connectors are exposed on the outside and look pretty messy.
Remove the center rear waist armor piece temporarily,
tuck the connector inside and cover it back up — it hides everything nice and cleanly.
Now you need to attach the shoulders and connect the shoulder connectors to the torso connectors.
But as you can see, there's way too much excess wire and it gets in the way something awful.
First, pull the shoulder out to the side, then into the empty space below,
stuff the connector and wires in as much as you can.
Even so, a good amount of wire still ends up sticking out like that.
Rotate the shoulder 180 degrees upward,
then route the wires along the groove on the underside of the shoulder and stuff the excess wire into the empty space inside the shoulder joint.
Then once you cover it with the side torso armor,
all those long wires disappear completely and you can get it so they're just barely visible between the torso and shoulder.
They really put a lot of thought into hiding the wires in the design. ^^
Then connect the connector at the back of the neck to the head,
and even after putting the back of the head cover on, the wires and connector end up exposed like this.
If you push them as far as possible into the inside of the back cover, you can get them almost completely out of sight.
Finally, plug the backpack LED unit into the hole on the inside of the backpack.
Time to test if everything's connected properly~
Insert the battery pack into the hole at the front of the stand, feeding the wire through as you go.
Loop the wire once around the clip at the bottom of the stand, then pull it out toward the back.
Feed the wire through the groove on the back of the stand's column so that the connector comes out at the very end.
Then pass the two connectors coming from the Unicorn body through the hole in the stand,
and connect the larger one to the battery pack.
Once you attach the backpack LED unit as well, assembly is complete.
Finally, check that the LED unit is working properly!
