RG RX-178

Gundam Mk-II Titans

Kit Review

Straight build + panel lining + seals

Finally~~ the Mk-II has made its way into the RG lineup! Originally, the AEUG version and the Titans version were supposed to release at the same time, but there was an unprecedented situation where a molding defect was found in the first production run of the RG Mk-II AEUG version, so only the Titans version ended up releasing first. It almost turned into a situation like the MG Destiny, where a damaged version of the Mk-II AEUG could've come out as a first-run limited edition. lol

First off, the overall feel is that it's noticeably more solid compared to previous RG kits. The parts fit, joint strength, and the thicker inner frame that suits the Mk-II's character all give it a slightly different feel in hand. ^^ The parts are small, but somehow it just feels more comfortable to work with. The solid-frame joints have also been completely redesigned from scratch, and the impressive interlocking movement of the arm and leg inner frames is genuinely jaw-dropping — it really doesn't disappoint. I took a ton of photos, but the feeling of actually handling it in person is just impossible to put into words..

True to RG form, the full set of standard weapons is included, and every single one shows off a level of gimmicks and color separation that's hard to believe for a 1/144 scale kit. From the individual rounds inside the magazine, to the shield's extension gimmick, to the rifle's folding scope — the quality doesn't fall behind existing MG kits at all, and in terms of detail, it actually surpasses them.

Perhaps because of the precise and solid frame, the articulation feels slightly less impressive compared to other RG kits. The new hip joint gimmick is included, but it doesn't really do much in practice, which is a bit of a letdown. It's especially lacking when it comes to pulling off dynamic poses like the RG Zaku or Strike. And just like other RG kits, the MG-sized beam saber parts look way too unbalanced on this scale.. I honestly can't figure out why they keep including such oversized beam parts. It's a weirdly mismatched combo. -_-;

What makes the RG Mk-II unique is that it comes with test type configuration parts that have never been included with any previous Mk-II kit. As you can see in the review photos, there are slight differences in the shoulders, chest ducts, and leg ducts, though honestly even after swapping them out, the overall look doesn't change all that dramatically. ^^; Still, having this kind of unique option available does add to the kit's value in its own way.

Overall, this is a very satisfying kit — it really makes you think, "yep, this is RG! And yep, this is the Mk-II!" It was a genuinely fun build. There are a few minor gripes, but it's actually a bit easier to put together than other RG kits, and that satisfying tactile feel in your hands is more than enough to reignite your Gunpla-building spirit after a while. I'm grateful to the Bandai developers for putting in the effort that a fan-favorite like the Mk-II deserves — and I'm sure plenty of people will be buying three of these to build Units 1, 2, and 3. :-)
