Wing Gundam Zero EW

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Seals

Wing Gundam Zero EW (a.k.a. Wing Zero Custom) has been released as the 17th RG kit. The overall package stays true to the RG concept, and since it's a new series mobile suit, it uses a brand new inner frame runner — the 9th unique runner in the RG lineup.

Since the RG concept aims to pack MG-level or better gimmicks into a 1/144 scale kit, even at this small size you get a cockpit hatch that opens and shoulder cannon pods that open and close — all neatly reproduced. The minor transformation gimmicks in the shoulders and knees for the atmospheric reentry mode are also implemented just as cleanly as on the MG.

The highlight of Wing Zero is of course those flashy "chicken wings." The shape of all four wings is faithfully reproduced, and the wing open gimmick works just as well as on the MG. And naturally, combining the Twin Buster Rifles is a standard feature!

The overall impression is that it does a great job of squeezing all of the MG's gimmicks into 1/144 scale — but somehow it doesn't feel like it goes beyond that. On the flip side, the compact body and tight inner frame joints give it noticeably better feel and stability when posing, which is impressive. In particular, the small feathers on the MG wings were notorious for falling off at the slightest touch, but the RG's feathers are built to stay put no matter what.

In the end, this kit's significance lies in how faithfully it brings Wing Zero Custom into the RG format, and the meticulous RG quality really shines through. That said, compared to the MG it's just smaller without any RG-exclusive special features, so it can feel a little underwhelming in that regard. Still, if you're a Wing Zero Custom fan, this is a great kit that'll give you plenty of fun. :-)
