It's already been 5 years since the RG line launched, and now the 00 Raiser arrives as the 18th entry. As expected, the frame runners are carried over directly from the RG Exia. It comes as a full-option kit including 00 Gundam, the 0 Raiser, all standard weapons, and the GN Sword III.
The overall quality stays true to the RG concept — nothing feels rushed or overlooked, and everything is designed with that meticulous RG touch. All the features from the MG version have been faithfully carried over to the RG: the full weapon loadout, gimmicks, the 0 Raiser's transformation and docking sequence, and more. The 0 Raiser hatch opening, the movable backpack cover, the cockpit hatch — these are all gimmicks that aren't easy to pull off at 1/144 scale, and yet not a single one was left out. You can't help but be genuinely impressed by that level of craftsmanship.
There's a lot to cover if you go through each of these features one by one, but since they've all already been done in the MG and PG versions, I don't think I need to go through every single one. Just think of it as a small kit that packs in every single design gimmick the 00 Raiser has to offer. ^^
Every time I build an RG I'm reminded of this, but the frame joints have great strength and the kit is light, so the stability is really impressive. The 00 Raiser is notoriously tricky to stand upright regardless of grade — it's got a big backpack and a lot hanging off it — but thanks to those tight joints on the RG, you can get it standing at a proper angle without any trouble. You barely even need to think about the center of gravity and it just stands there perfectly!
That said, with so much attached to it, parts do occasionally pop off when you're moving the joints around for posing. The shoulder armor and GN Drives are the worst offenders since they're a bit looser than the rest ^_^; The backpack in particular can come off entirely sometimes — you'll want to make sure it's firmly seated since it connects to the body via an L-shaped peg. As long as you handle those few spots carefully though, the stability is far better than either the HG or MG.
One thing worth noting — there's a new change to the joint parts used for mounting on an Action Base 2 or a standard stand. The connection between these joint parts and the kit has always felt a bit shaky and unreliable, and it seems like Bandai took that feedback on board. The new design uses a U-shaped joint part that slides into a rail below the hip joints. (See the review photos.) It's nice that once it's on the stand and left alone it won't fall off — but the problem is the slide mechanism itself doesn't hold very tightly, so if you bump it the wrong way it can get pushed up and come loose -_-;; At least it won't fall off on its own from gravity, which is a relief, but it would've been great if they'd made the slide mechanism itself a tighter fit too.
Also worth mentioning — while most RG kits are priced around ¥2500, the 00 Raiser comes in at ¥3000, likely because of the sheer amount of runners and parts included. It does take quite a bit of time to build as a result. But it's such a satisfying kit to put together — the kind where you actually feel a little sad as the parts pile gets smaller. That's the RG experience for you. ^^ (Though weirdly, I wouldn't want to build the same RG twice...)
Anyway, every RG kit leaves me impressed while I'm building it, and this one is no exception — it's a genuinely great kit that lives up to the RG name with plenty of that craftsman spirit baked in. If you're an OO fan, this is an obvious must-buy, and if you're into small but detailed kits, you won't regret picking this one up~ :-)
