Kit Review
Straight build + Panel lining + Seals
Straight build + Panel lining + Seals
Following the Red Frame, the Gold Frame Amatsu Mina — the ultimate Astray — has now been released as an RG. The basic skeleton and a good number of parts are reused from the RG Red Frame runners, but since this is such a different-looking kit, 70% of the parts are brand-new sculpts. Compared to other RGs, the overall amount of runners and content here is pretty substantial.
First off, as expected, the black armor has a gloss injection finish that looks fantastic, but the gold frame is provided in a dull yellowish-brown plastic rather than a plated finish. That said, true to RG form, the color separation is done with impressive attention to even the smallest details, so even without panel lining after the straight build, it already looks plenty flashy. The number of seals is on the smaller side too, so the difference before and after applying them isn't all that dramatic.
The weapons loadout is incredibly varied — you get the large wing unit on the back called the "Maga no Ikutachi", the ranged weapon "Trikeros Kai" that mounts on the right arm, the claw weapon "Tsumuhano Tachi" on the left forearm, the sword "Totsukano Tsurugi" stored on the side skirts, and the spear-type weapon "Okitsuno Kagami" that wasn't included in the previous kit. (The weapon names are a bit of a mouthful.) There are also two types of wire parts included, which let you either launch the spear portion of the Okitsuno Kagami, or float the Maganno Shirahoko — which deploys from beneath the Maga no Ikutachi — in mid-air. A clear stand is also included to support these launched weapons, though the wire holds its shape pretty well, so you can pull off a floating effect to some degree even without the stand.
The large wing-shaped Maga no Ikutachi in particular has a ton of added gimmicks that let it unfold and open in multiple stages, giving it an incredibly dynamic look. Since an MG version hasn't been released yet, this really feels like the best Amatsu Mina we've ever gotten. That said, the parts are small, and the gloss injection material is quite stiff by nature, so cleaning up the gates and snapping everything together is a real workout — the build process is pretty tough going... (My fingers are killing me T_T)
Despite the flashy, complex design with all the weapons, wings, and everything else, the overall build holds together reasonably well. The hip and waist joints feel a little iffy compared to the rest, though. Articulation is excellent as you'd expect from an RG, but all the accessories do get in the way of posing a bit. Still, the look is so striking that even a simple pose makes for a really powerful display.
This is a kit I'd highly recommend to anyone who loves flashy builds or is a fan of the Astray series — and honestly, for something this complex and intricate, ¥3000 feels like an absolute steal. It does take longer to build than other RGs since there are more parts and they're stiffer, but I think this is a masterpiece RG that's absolutely worth the effort. :-)
