Straight build

Wing Gundam has been released as the 35th RG kit. We've had the Wing Gundam and Wing Gundam Zero in EW versions before, but this time it's the original Wing. It came out with clean, solid quality that stays true to the RG format.

First off, as you'd expect from a modern RG, it features an exemplary full inner frame with excellent detail, and despite its small size, it's packed with all kinds of gimmicks you'd normally only find in MG kits. The transformation into bird mode is executed at MG level, and the knee transformation in particular feels a bit cleaner than the MG version. A new landing gear gimmick has also been added to the rear skirt for the landed position, though the bird mode honestly looks better up on a stand. On top of that, the energy pack on the buster rifle is detachable, and a long stand joint part is included that works for both MS mode and bird mode.

The most impressive gimmick on the RG Wing Gundam has to be the wing expansion feature. At first glance it looks like a simple two-stage spread, but if you separate the front and back wings that are layered together, they actually expand out in a total of 7 stages. This allows for much more dramatic poses, and the wings hold their position well once extended, so you can spread them out without any worries.

Basic articulation is decent, and despite the narrow lower body, the hip slide gimmick is included. That said, when you raise the thighs too high the front skirts tend to pop off, so it's a bit hard to say it's all that effective. Joint strength feels a little stiffer than your typical RG, which means the holding power is excellent. Though given the size, it might've been fine to tune the joints a bit smoother.

One thing to watch out for — the small round green clear part that plugs into the center of the chest doesn't hold very well due to the structure, and it can fall out easily. In my case I actually lost it once and had a real struggle finding it in the vacuum cleaner's dust bin. T_T I'd recommend either gluing it in place, or intentionally leaving the gate on the green part slightly unclean to tighten up the fit.

All in all, it's a clean, well-made RG kit, and if you were a fan of the original Wing Gundam, you'll definitely be satisfied. So many gimmicks packed into such a tiny kit — RG really does have its own special charm and magic. :-)
