God Gundam

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Seals

God Gundam has been released as the 37th RG kit. The Gundams from Mobile Fighter G Gundam are fundamentally close-combat machines, so articulation and posability have always been key for these suits — and it feels like we've finally gotten the definitive version with this God Gundam. ^^

First off, this has the best articulation of any RG to date. As you can see in the photos above, the legs can be raised straight up to the side almost vertically. This is made possible by the sliding hip joint combined with incredibly flexible side skirts that don't interfere with leg movement at all. The flexible ankle joints can also maintain ground contact at nearly horizontal angles, which means the kit stays stable in just about any pose on a flat surface. Joint strength is also solid — almost on the stiff side, actually.

Beyond being the ultimate action figure, this kit really feels like a lot of care went into its development overall. Given how action-focused it is, ring-type joints have been used on the arm joints (where a ring-shaped pin is inserted at a specific angle and then rotated to lock in place) to keep them from popping out during posing. The signature halo (rin) effect parts are also done in a really premium way — three layers of differently colored PET sheets stacked into a three-dimensional structure. The result looks incredibly high-end.

One more improvement worth mentioning — the beam sabers stored in the side skirts now have a much more secure fit. Instead of just plugging them in from the top, you slide them in from the back and lock them into place, so they won't fall out easily during posing. They also added cover parts for the action base mounting hole (a nice touch), so you can hide it when not in use. And there's even a linked gimmick where opening the rear leg covers causes the inner verniers to pop out — really nicely thought out.

As for the downsides — first off, there's a lot of interference between the neck parts and the chest when you try to open it up for the Sekiha Tenkyoken pose. It's one of those things you really have to feel for yourself, but the neck can get in the way and make it hard to open the chest properly. After opening and closing it a bunch of times I got the hang of it, but the root cause is that there's just not enough clearance between the neck and chest parts — so when you're building it, make sure the neck part is seated exactly in the right position. Also, nothing on the main body tends to pop off during posing, but the Core Lander plugged into the back has a relatively weak hold and does come loose every now and then. Being careful about it keeps things fine, but since the body joints are so solid, the Core Lander's connection ends up looking weak by comparison.

All in all though, this kit came out with a level of quality that exceeds expectations — it's genuinely top-tier stuff. Above all, the articulation is on a whole other level, and for anyone who was disappointed by the MG or HGFC God Gundam, this is going to feel like a real treat. Getting this kind of quality at ¥3,500 is something else — the best RG kits really do offer insane value for money. :-)
