This kit is the RG Evangelion Unit-00, the second release in the RG Eva series. Evangelion is basically a great item for rolling out variations — the body structure is nearly identical across units by design, with only the color combinations being different.

Unit-00 is also made up of mostly the same parts as the RG Unit-01, with just the molded color combination cleverly changed. Only the head, chest, shoulders, and forearm armor unique to Unit-00 are newly sculpted. Also included are the shoulder, chest, and thigh armor for the upgraded Unit-00 Kai — the repaired version that appears later in the story — so you can swap between the original and upgraded configurations with a simple parts swap. Going by the TV series, the upgraded version should have changed to blue, but in the Rebuild of Evangelion films it just stays yellow. And while the Kai's shoulders look similar to Unit-01's at first glance, if you look closely the front and side sculpting is actually different.

Since only the molded colors and some outer armor parts are changed, the structural characteristics, articulation, joint strength, gimmicks, and weapons/accessory lineup are all identical to the RG Unit-01. You can pull off a wide variety of dynamic poses thanks to the impressive articulation, but you still need to be careful when moving the joints due to their somewhat finicky nature. One thing worth noting: the extra hand set that was added in the RG Unit-01 DX set for the A.T. Field effect is included as a standard item with the RG Unit-00. So the regular RG Unit-01 comes with 6 hand types and the DX version with 7 — but the regular RG Unit-00 comes with all 7 hand types right out of the box.

Anyway, it's great that we now have a yellow Unit-00 on the high-quality RG Eva platform. Despite a few caveats and minor disappointments, this is undeniably a kit of remarkable quality. If you were happy with how the RG Unit-01 turned out, then picking up Unit-00 is pretty much a no-brainer, right? :-)
