This kit is the RG Evangelion Unit-02, the third release in the RG Eva series. Since Unit-01 and Unit-00 had already come out, this was obviously the next variation we needed. Just like with Unit-00, the molded colors have been changed and only the head, shoulders, and chest use new parts — the majority of the body parts are shared from the same platform.

So all the structural features, articulation, joint strength, and gimmicks are identical to the RG Unit-01/Unit-00. The impressive articulation allows for a wide variety of poses, but it's still a kit where you need to be careful when moving the joints due to their somewhat finicky nature. So for this review, it's probably best to focus on what's different compared to the previous Unit-01/Unit-00. The shoulders use the same design as Unit-00 rather than Unit-01, and new designs are applied only to the head and chest. For weapons, in addition to all the existing ones, the Thunder Spear and two Progressive Knives (Unit-02 version) have been added. The Thunder Spear can be folded using a combination of folding and slide mold gimmicks. On top of that, the hands have been expanded from the previous maximum of 7 types to 8 types — though since one of the old hand types has been dropped as a leftover part, effectively 2 new hand types have been added.

Sure, Evangelion is a series that was always going to be a string of color variant kits by nature, but each unit has such a strong individual character that you can easily get emotionally invested in each one. There are a few things to watch out for, but it's a genuinely impressive high-quality kit, so building multiple ones never really got old. (Much like how building MG Zaku 2.0 was still bearable up to the 10th one...) Anyway, if we're talking Eva, Units 00, 01, and 02 are basically the essential set — if you're an Eva fan, these are definitely worth collecting. :-)
