Straight build

This kit is the RG Evangelion Unit-03 & ESV Shield Set, released as the 6th entry in the RG Eva series. Unit-03 is based on the Rebuild of Evangelion design piloted by Asuka — structurally it's the same as the existing Unit-01 with only the head design changed. As a bonus, the ESV Shield used by Unit-00 is bundled in together.

Aside from the new head, the body's structural features and weapons/accessories are identical to previous releases. It still delivers excellent articulation and detail, making it a fun kit to pose. The new head includes a mouth-opening gimmick, and you can also attach a tiny optical cover part over the eyes — it feels a bit iffy going on, but surprisingly it stays put without falling off.

The included ESV Shield is the one used by Unit-00 during the Yashima Operation in the Rebuild films, and it shows excellent color separation and detail throughout. The top small shield detaches, and the center cover opens and closes — two dedicated hands are also included for a secure grip. There's even a dedicated stand to support the movable bunker at the bottom, so you can display the shield upright on its own. You can attach it to the RG Unit-00 to recreate in-film poses, though getting the angles just right takes a bit of time. Either way, with the positron rifle and the ESV Shield both out as bonus parts, we can finally recreate that iconic Yashima Operation scene with Unit-01 + Unit-00 together in RG form.

So aside from the head, there's not much new to see on Unit-03 — but with a key item like the ESV Shield packed in, this has ended up being a high-value kit for Eva fans. :-)
