Kit Review
Straight build
Straight build
Following the SD Dendrobium — a massive MA (Mobile Armor) — its arch-rival, the MA Neue Ziel, has now been released in SD form. Normally SD kits feature an oversized head in a super-deformed style, but in the Neue Ziel's case, it goes the Super Deformed route (SD standing for "Super Deformed" — meaning exaggerated proportions) by puffing up those massive shoulder armor pieces while keeping the head relatively small.
Since the design is almost entirely monochrome to begin with, after the straight build there are no seals used at all except for the mono-eye. The verniers scattered across the body should really be in gray, but unfortunately they come out the same color as the body, which makes the overall color scheme feel a bit plain. If you're someone who enjoys the out-of-box look, you might find that a little disappointing — the verniers at least look like they'll need some spot painting.
On the plus side, Neue Ziel's basic accessories are all included — sub arms, claw arm projectiles, beam sabers, and more. Also, the original Neue Ziel's design with that long tail(?) hanging down would normally make it impossible to set on a flat surface, but the SD Neue Ziel can actually stand on the floor in a tripod stance using the stabilizers on the back, which is a neat little touch ^^;
Being an MA by nature, the overall size is bigger and chunkier than your average BB Senshi, with roughly the same bulk as the SD Dendrobium. That also means the price tag is a hefty ¥800, putting it up there with the Dendrobium as one of the pricier entries in the SD lineup~
Compared to other SD kits it feels like the super-deforming is dialed back a bit, and it's missing some of that classic stubby cuteness — but even so, next to the Gundam Collection and HGM versions of the Neue Ziel, there's something charming about how thick and squat this one looks. It's got its own personality. Build it alongside the SD Dendrobium and display them together for a cute pairing — a solid, no-fuss SD kit :-)
