Gundam Exia

Kit Review

Straight build

The SD Gundam SEED lineup has wrapped up, and now the SD 00 lineup is kicking off. The first release is naturally Gundam Exia, and it comes with the updated proportions introduced after the SEED series applied in a similar fashion. That said, there is one change from the SD SEED series — the elbows are no longer articulated, and instead come fixed in place with a focus on proportions.

The 00 series generally has a pretty impressive arsenal, and Exia's weapons — the GN Sword, a set of GN Blades, and a set of beam sabers — are all faithfully reproduced here. The two GN Blades also come with side-mounting parts, so you can faithfully recreate all those signature Exia scenes.

That said, the more you handle it, the more it feels like the overall quality has taken a slight step back compared to the SD SEED series. ^^; The fixed elbows probably contribute to that feeling, but overall the finish, proportions, and general look all feel like a bit of a regression. The legs in particular have a pretty limited range of motion, which makes poses feel a bit stiff.

Anyway, as the first entry in the SD 00 lineup it's a decent enough kit, but it's a shame that it feels like the quality suddenly jumped back a few years. ^:-)
