SD BB Senshi

Gundam Legilis

Kit Review

Straight build

Following Gundam AGE 1, 2, and 3, the Gundam Legilis has now been released in SD form. The basic size and proportion concept is similar to the previous SD AGE Gundams, but since this design features a lot more curves and flowing lines rather than sharp angles, it ends up feeling quite different overall.

The color separation is solid as a base, and the seals help fill in the rest nicely — but what's really interesting is that the eyes can be assembled in two ways: a visor-style single eye or a more conventional eye shape. It's not just a matter of swapping out an eye seal either; the parts themselves are completely interchangeable. The visor-style eye even makes use of a clear runner, and the end result looks really good.

True to the BB Senshi lineup's knack for squeezing in surprisingly detailed features even at this small scale, the SD Legilis also includes a recreation of the Legilis Core. The idea is that you detach the head, neck, and back wings all in one piece to form what looks like a big-headed bird (?) — it was always a bizarre concept to begin with, but seeing it recreated on an already oversized SD head makes it even more unsettling.. ;

One thing that bugs me is that the wing joints are too loose, so the wings keep drooping downward. They're connected via ball joints, but the holding strength just isn't there — whether folded or spread out, they won't stay in place properly.

The biggest mystery with this kit is the price. Even accounting for inflation, slapping a ¥1000 price tag on a kit of this size is a bit much. The previous SD AGE 1, 2, and 3 kits came with a ton of extra parts for swapping configurations, so ¥1000 made sense for those — but this one has noticeably fewer parts and still costs the same ¥1000. Regular SD kits have been holding steady at around the ¥600 range, so it feels like they're using this as an opportunity to quietly bump up the price tier, which is a little sketchy.. ;;

That said, the kit quality itself is decent enough, and while the value-for-money isn't great, the price difference isn't huge in the grand scheme of things. If you think of it as part of a growing lineup of SD versions for AGE fans, it's a perfectly fine kit. :-)
