SD Cross Silhouette

Mazinger Z

Kit Review

Straight build

Non-Gundam mecha have been added to the SD Cross Silhouette lineup, and Mazinger Z is the first one out of the gate. Since the shape is quite different, the Cross Silhouette frame (CS frame for short) has been redesigned with a whole new structure — more parts are involved, and it's been upgraded in a number of ways.

The frame itself is more precise, but the biggest improvement is the articulation. In particular, the addition of a part that lets the hip joint rotate 180 degrees has dramatically expanded the range of leg movement. I guess since the lower body design is basically just trunks (...) with no skirt, they came up with this idea to compensate — and thanks to that, you can even pull off demanding poses like kneeling.

On top of that, the black and blue outer armor parts are gloss-injected, giving them a beautiful shiny finish, and the overall proportions are solid, so even a straight straight build looks really impressive. You also get key accessories like a detachable Hover Pilder, effect parts for the Rocket Punch, and the Jet Scrander — so the overall package is pretty satisfying.

With the new CS Frame 2, you can remove the elbow and knee joints to switch to SD mode. You can also swap in larger eye parts designed for SD mode, though the size difference isn't that dramatic so it's not a huge visual change. The finished SD mode is way stubbier than CS mode, but it suddenly becomes incredibly cute — like it turned into a little kid ^^; The elbows and knees are fixed in SD mode so posing options are limited, but the cuteness factor is absolutely off the charts.

Overall, this is a kit that delivers high quality, great looks, and plenty of fun features. If you're into SD kits and have any interest in Mazinger, this is one I'd highly recommend — it's a really enjoyable build. :-)
