SD Cross Silhouette

Shin Getter

Kit Review

Straight build

Shin Getter has joined the SD Cross Silhouette lineup, which previously only had Gunpla and Mazinga kits. The overall concept is pretty much the same as the Mazinga kits, using the same CS Frame 2. It's a kit that stays true to the series' goal (?) of applying different designs to the same format.

So the articulation and SD mode conversion work similarly to the Mazingers, though there are a few differences. For one, while it uses the same CS Frame 2, the shoulder joint structure means one of the shoulder frame parts gets dropped as a leftover part, so you can't disassemble the shoulders in the frame shot. As a result, when switching to SD proportions, instead of simply removing the elbow joints, you also need to add pipe-shaped connector parts in their place, and the SD eyes have pupils that are ever so slightly larger. Also, the proportion difference between SD mode and CS mode feels relatively smaller compared to the Mazinga series.

Due to the design, you'll need to apply a bunch of green stripe seals all over the body, and these can be surprisingly tricky to get on cleanly, so watch out when you're working on those. Also, the wings are wider than those on the Mazingers, and they tend to droop downward easily under their own weight.

Anyway, even though it's the same basic setup, the completely different design gives it a fresh feel, and it's got that SD cuteness charm going for it. Since Getter series kits from Bandai aren't exactly easy to come by, if you're a fan it's definitely worth building one. :-)
