SD EX-Standard

Wing Gundam Zero EW

Kit Review

Straight build

The last of the four initial SD EX-Standard releases is the Wing Gundam Zero EW (Endless Waltz). It actually came out at the same time as the First Gundam, Strike, and Exia, but it got number 4 in the lineup.

Compared to what you could call the older version — the BB Senshi Wing Zero — there's a pretty big difference in both proportions and size. Staying true to the EX-Standard concept, the head and torso are smaller, the legs are longer, and the wings are much larger and longer as well. Visually, it's a massive step up, though there are still a few things to nitpick.

First off, the Twin Buster Rifle being molded as a single non-separating piece feels like a bit of a letdown — you have to wonder if simplifying it that far was really necessary. The wings also have a pretty limited range of motion and feel stiff to transform, though you can at least detach and reattach them to recreate the spread mode. And compared to the other EX-Standard SD kits, the poses somehow don't feel quite as natural — probably due to the proportions being thrown off a bit by those oversized wings.

On top of that, unlike the other kits, the hollow areas extend all the way to the back of the shoulders, which makes it feel like a slight step down compared to the other three initial EX-Standard releases overall. That said, this is the first Wing Zero to come out with this kind of modern proportions, and the overall molding and sculpt are done in a nice up-to-date style, so it does feel like a proper new kit. Either way, if you're a fan of SD kits and Wing Gundam, it's definitely worth picking up for a fun little build :-)
