SD G Generation

ZZ-Gundam

Kit Review

Straight build

After Mk-II got the SD treatment in the GG series, ZZ was released next, skipping over Zeta entirely. It came packaged as BB Senshi No. 19 Full Armor ZZ Gundam with the Mega Rider added in. Just like the BB Senshi version, you can swap to Full Armor ZZ by removing and attaching the armor parts.

First off, the kit's molded colors are a bit... hmm; The bluish-purple molded color is just off, and the blue isn't quite right either — it's got a very food-toy feel to it. There are a lot of seals to apply and they look pretty rough, and the step gaps and seam lines are pretty bad too. Overall, this is one of the old-style SD kits with the worst color accuracy, so painting is pretty much a must.

The Hyper Mega Cannon on the Full Armor ZZ can fire 2 types of missiles via a spring gimmick, and maybe it's because the barrel is so long and big, but they fly in a straight line for 50cm or more — quite impressive~

The Mega Rider included to make up for the kit's shortcomings comes molded in just a single plain color, so it looks pretty basic... but it's still a rare find among injection-molded kits, and that's what makes it worthwhile. The detail level is just average. You could probably use it to carry other figures besides ZZ too.

This GG series ZZ was later reborn as a BB Senshi release — a high-quality new version that even transforms — so this old-style SD has pretty limited purchase value these days. That said, if you specifically need the Mega Rider, it's still a kit worth picking up for that reason alone :-)
