SD G Generation

Gundam F91 (V.S.B.R. Movable Type)

Kit Review

Straight build

G Generation Zero series numbers 1 through 20 are all re-releases (re-packagings) of old-release SDs from 1989, put out all at once in June 1999. Each one added one runner's worth of new features and came out ¥100 more expensive. This particular kit takes BB Senshi No. 74 Gundam F91, drops the 4-fin heat fins, and swaps in a movable V.S.B.R.

First off, unlike the early SDs from 1989, the quality has improved a bit — as you'd expect from a kit released in the '90s. Color separation still relies heavily on seals for a good chunk of it, but the overall silhouette and proportions feel much better. The size is also slightly larger, giving it a nicer sense of volume.

The SD F91 can be equipped with either A Armor or B Armor additional weapons, with the A-type being the well-known V.S.B.R. basic configuration. When it was re-released in '99, the V.S.B.R. was upgraded from fixed to movable — but honestly, when you actually extend it, the range is so short it barely makes a difference. ^^;; And for some reason, the 4-fin heat fins that were included for the B-type were removed in the re-release. Why take out something that was already there... hmm.. (see reference photos)

One of the main highlights of this kit is that it packs spring-loaded missile launch gimmicks into no less than 4 spots — the beam rifle, the bazooka, and two on the B-type armor. The launch power is a bit underwhelming across the board though.. And since it's an SD with a big head, the removable mask from the original series is pulled off pretty easily here too. ^^

Anyway, from No. 21 onward the quality steps up a bit compared to the earlier old-release kits, and the SD F91's proportions in particular feel really good — give it a nice paint job and it could easily hold its own against newer releases. :-)
