SD G Generation

Gundam F90 (A/P/V type)

Kit Review

Straight build

Shortly after the SD F91 came out, the F90 got the SD treatment as well. The F91 is based on the theatrical anime, but the F90 is a Gundam that exists within the story. This kit is essentially BB Senshi No. 96 Gundam F90 with A type weapons added, and as a result you can swap it into four different configurations: A, L, P, and V types.

This SD F90 supports three configurations — A/P/V — and the A type is made possible through an extra runner added when the kit was reprinted in '99. The earlier 1/100 F90 kit could do six types: A/P/V/D/S/L, and the SD lineup covers three of those.

In terms of overall size and volume, just like the F91, it's noticeably bigger than the older SD kits from before No. 20. And being a kit from the '90s, the detail and molding have a much sharper, crisper feel to them. Unlike the SD F91, which had a rounded design to begin with, the F90 definitely has that angular look going for it — it's hard to believe this was originally released back in '91.

Probably because of the incredibly complex color scheme, color separation was completely thrown out the window from the start, and instead seals are plastered all over the body to more or less pull off the intended colors. ^^; The straight build alone looks a bit rough, but once you slap the seals on it's at least a fair bit better.

Especially given how sharp the detail and angles are, I think a good paint job would make this look remarkably close to a modern kit. And since most of the main base colors outside the body are white, painting it should be pretty straightforward too.

Either way, this is a solid early SD kit that really drives home the fact that SD kits got a genuine upgrade in detail and size as we moved into the '90s — and it's got the sharp lines to prove it. :-)
