SD G Generation

Gundam Maxter

Kit Review

Straight build

The third Mobile Fighter G Gundam SD kit is Gundam Maxter, which gives off the vibe of an American football player. The combination of blue, red, and white gives it a strong, powerful impression, and the stocky look — almost like it's wearing a helmet — is one of its defining features. In the show, it represents Neo America, and the design is clearly meant to give off that American feel. Like the previous kits, this is essentially a repackage of BB Senshi No. 136 Gundam Maxter from 1994, with the dual cannons and BB Senshi original gimmicks removed, and the shield and Cyclone Punches added in their place.

First off, the kit comes with options for Gundam Maxter's signature Fighting Knuckle mode — where you slip something onto the fists for close combat — including both the Cyclone Punch that fits over the hands and the Burning Punch that uses the detached shoulder armor. It also lets you recreate the surfing mode where it rides on the shield, though it's a bit rough around the edges. All in all, it's a small kit but packed with a decent amount of content. The BB Senshi original gimmicks are gone, but that actually makes it feel closer to the source material.

As a kit, it's a solid enough entry as an old-style G-Generation release, but the source unit itself isn't exactly the most well-known or popular, so this one will probably appeal mainly to Mobile Fighter G Gundam fans. :-)
