SD G Generation

Char's Z'Gok

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the SD Char's Z'Gok, one of the biggest icons of the G Generation line. The aquatic MS series already has its own kind of cuteness going for it, but the SD Z'Gok is just pure adorableness. ^^

SD figures are usually associated with that big-headed, super-deformed look, but the Z'Gok's body and head are essentially one piece, so you'd think that would make the SD treatment a bit tricky. Instead, by emphasizing that chubby inverted-triangle body shape, it actually ends up even cuter than other kits. The design does mean articulation feels a bit more restricted in SD form, but honestly, this is the kind of kit that looks great just sitting on a shelf, so articulation doesn't really matter much here.

That said, the knees do bend 90 degrees backward, so you can recreate the underwater navigation mode, and three types of hands are included. The catch is that you only get one of each hand type, so the two hands will always end up in different poses. It would've been nicer to get a full matching pair of each — that's a bit of a shame.

One of the big highlights of the SD Char's Z'Gok is the bonus little GM that comes with it. It's assembled from just two parts — front and back — but it's got way more dimension than you'd expect, and it's an endlessly cute little GM standing at attention. ^^ Since the Z'Gok itself doesn't use many parts, it looks like they used the leftover runners to throw in this bonus, and it really does add a lot of value to the kit.

Anyway, true to its reputation as one of the most popular kits in the old SD G Generation series, satisfaction is high — though it can be a little harder to track down than others. I believe it's been reprinted more times than just about any other SD kit, but it's one of those must-have SD items you should grab whenever you get the chance. :-)
