Blue Destiny Unit 1

Kit Review

Straight build

Following the previously released SD Blue Destiny Unit 3, Blue Destiny Unit 1 has now gotten the SD treatment as well. This kit includes the Unit 2 head (which is technically the same mold as Unit 3 but in a different molded color), along with Unit 2 seals in the box, so you can choose to build either Unit 1 or Unit 2.

Taking a closer look at what's in the box, it's basically the existing Unit 3 kit recast in a blue color scheme with most of the weapons dropped, and a new Unit 1 head added in their place. The idea is that you build the blue Unit 1 as-is, or swap in the Unit 2 head and add/swap out some seals to represent Unit 2 — but here's the thing...

The problem is that trying to match the molded colors for two different units at the same time results in a color combo that doesn't really work for either. T_T
Overall the molded colors are set up for Unit 1, so if you build it as Unit 2 the colors are completely off. And even for Unit 1, the front skirt molded color doesn't match, so it ends up being a half-baked setup either way. (No seals for it either.) In short, straight out of the box this kit is disappointing in a lot of ways — it's really more of a kit for painters. To make matters worse, one extra head was added while four weapons from the original kit were cut entirely, so you'd have to borrow them from the Unit 3 kit... and in an out-of-box build, the color combo looks pretty rough. (See photos.)

The basic quality is on par with older-style SD kits, and the hollow gaps on the back of the arms are pretty bad too — overall it's not an SD kit that really impresses quality-wise. That said, if you set the accuracy concerns aside for a moment, it does have a nice crisp blue color scheme and the design itself isn't bad.

Anyway, this is a kit that tried to catch two birds with one stone and ended up with a so-so molded color situation — but I suppose the real value is just in the fact that such a rare item got a release at all. It's a kit I'd recommend to those who plan to paint it, or to anyone looking to put together a full SD Blue Destiny Units 1, 2, and 3 lineup. :-)
