MGSD ZGMF-X10A

Freedom Gundam

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Seals

Freedom Gundam has been released as the first entry in the new MGSD lineup. True to its name, it's an SD kit with MG-level quality — the proportions are much slimmer than traditional SDs, and the frame and armor construction are put together with genuine MG-grade precision.

Basically, only the proportions are SD-style — the actual content is pure MG. There's an internal frame throughout the whole body except the forearms, and the detail work is quite refined. The limb articulation is also completely unlike traditional SDs, delivering the kind of smooth, flexible movement you'd expect from an MG. It's packed with premium gimmicks like a hip joint slide mechanism and flexible shoulder and waist joints.

Joint strength is smooth yet solid all around, and since the kit is on the smaller side, there's nothing really worrying about durability. It holds whatever pose you put it in, and despite the relatively short limbs, dynamic posing is totally doable. For aerial poses, you can use a separate Action Base — just open the lower backpack verniers to expose the stand mounting hole. On top of that, you also get a cockpit hatch open gimmick, shoulder vernier open gimmick, and even a thigh slide gimmick. That said, the thigh slide doesn't link to the knee movement like on a typical MG — you just pull the thigh out by hand to extend it.

The wing, cannon, and rail gun deployment gimmicks are also brilliantly executed at MG level. The rail guns deploy with the front and rear sections linked via a gear mechanism — just make sure to follow the manual carefully and push the rear gear teeth as far up as possible when assembling, or they won't deploy straight. The wings also get an extra gimmick that extends the large outer wings one step further, and they hold their position firmly at any angle, which is a relief. Particularly noteworthy is that the notoriously flimsy beam saber storage — a long-standing weak point of Freedom Gundam kits — has been completely solved here. There's a movable locking pin on the outside of the side skirt, so the beam saber is designed to never fall off during posing.

All in all, as an MG kit in SD proportions, this thing is pretty much flawless. It's more solid, more precise, and more stable to pose than any other Freedom Gundam kit out there. Personally, it feels like the most well-executed Freedom Gundam model kit to date. As long as you're okay with the SD-style proportions, this is a fantastic kit I'd recommend to any Gunpla fan. :-)
