1/100 ZGMF-1001/M

Blaze Zaku Phantom (Rey Za Burrel Custom)

Kit Review

Straight build + Partial paint + Panel lining + Decals

The second 1/100 Zaku Warrior is none other than the Blaze Zaku Phantom (Rey Za Burrel Custom). It's got shields on both shoulders, a bright white and pink color scheme, and comes armed with the Blaze Wizard backpack.

Naturally, the main body is identical to the previous 1/100 Zaku Warrior aside from the shoulder weapons. The changed right shoulder is really just the left shoulder included twice — no actual modifications there. It still has that satisfyingly stiff joint feel and excellent leg articulation.

The revised color scheme of white and pink gives it a really soft, bright look. The white molded color is that deep, matte-ish white that so many people love — gate marks barely show up either. The pink looks great too, and the purple molded color on the legs is a nice touch! With that vibrant color scheme plus the massive shields on both shoulders, this thing has some of the best presence of any 1/100 kit, hands down.

The newly added Blaze Wizard backpack has a whopping 8 points of articulation/opening across the front, back, and sides, and the missile pods are done in separate red parts. There are more spots that technically call for partial painting to match the official colors, but the white stickers cover things well enough to just let it slide... ^^;; The backpack is a bit heavy, so you'll need to shift the legs back slightly to keep it balanced, but it's not bad enough to seriously mess up the proportions. The one downside is that the waist joint ends up permanently bent backward though..

As already well known, the quality is solidly above average — there's really nothing major to complain about. Above all, the vibrant colors and great presence make this a kit that shows impressive quality even straight from a straight build. At this level of quality, Bandai, feel free to reuse this mold as much as you want! ^^
