Infinite Justice Gundam

Kit Review

Straight build + Partial paint + Panel lining + Decals

After nearly a year of silence, the 1/100 SEED Destiny lineup has kicked back into gear, and the first out of the gate is the Infinite Justice Gundam. Maybe because it took a whole year to arrive, they were advertising that it would be a step up in quality — and cracking it open, it really does show clear improvement over the previous 1/100 No Grade kits.

For starters, the overall detail has improved and the molding is more refined. It looks like they invested a bit more on the tooling side of things. Along with this upgraded detail, the chunky proportions of the old 1/100 No Grades have been slimmed down considerably, so just looking at the appearance, it's reached a level where you could almost call it an MG. The molded colors also feel slightly more subtle and premium. And while it doesn't have MG-level seam line hiding tricks, the color separation on the wings, legs, and feet is a notch above the previous 1/100s.

The slimmed-down proportions might be a matter of taste, but there's no denying it looks more refined. All in all, thanks to these various level-up points, the feel while building is noticeably better, and the overall quality feels like a genuine improvement.

This is the third kit to get the first-run limited package treatment, following Strike Freedom and Destiny, and the first-run edition comes with a dedicated stand that's the same as the previous ones but in a different color. The previous two first-run limited kits were already on the heavy side in the back, but the Infinite Justice Gundam carries a massive backpack that outright dwarfs the main body, making the stand pretty much an absolute necessity. Without it, just keeping the body upright is a challenge, let alone pulling off any action poses.

Especially with a kit this back-heavy, joint strength becomes a major issue — and unfortunately the ankle joints, the most critical ones, are on the loose side, which makes the stand even more essential. So if you're planning to pick this kit up, you'll want to track down the first-run limited edition one way or another.

The color separation is impressively well thought-out for a No Grade, but since the mobile suit itself has such a complex color scheme to begin with, there are still quite a few spots that need partial painting. The wing color separation in particular is excellent, but you'd still need to paint fairly large areas to match the design colors exactly. I went back and forth on whether to paint it myself, but I was busy (ahem;) and it already had plenty of depth just as a straight build, so I just passed.. ^^; Panel lining was good enough for me.

On top of that, the sheer variety of weapons is top-notch. This kit comes with all kinds of beam parts — beam sabers as a given, beam parts for the shield, beam parts for the wings, and even a peculiar beam blade part that fits between the knee and the top of the foot. The multi-function shield recreation is especially impressive, offering four additional functions: beam weapon / beam boomerang / claw weapon / beam shield. The beam rifle almost looks plain and underwhelming by comparison — this is a kit where the beam shield is far more offensive than defensive.

The joints aren't super tight, but they hold up fine for action poses on the stand, and the articulation is decent enough to pull off a good variety of poses. The one annoying point, though, is that the beam sabers mounted on the sides don't stay in place very well. They keep popping out every time you move anything — seriously...

All in all, this is a solid kit that shows a clear step up in quality from the previous 1/100s, and I'd expect the building satisfaction to be pretty high. The stand being a necessity is a limitation, but if you get the first-run limited edition, that's a non-issue. I also get the feeling they may have intentionally kept the part splits on the thighs and forearms showing seam lines — like the old 1/100s — just to differentiate it from the MG line. Aside from the lack of an inner frame and a few visible seam lines, this is an excellent kit that's practically on par with an MG. And the sheer presence of that massive flight unit on the back is absolutely the best! :-)
