Regen Duel Gundam

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Seals

The third kit in the out-of-nowhere SEED Variation 1/100 lineup is the Regen Duel Gundam, based on the Duel Gundam. The original Assault Shroud armor has been removed, and the existing armor pieces have been redistributed around the base Duel Gundam frame, along with a number of additional parts thrown into the mix.

Looking at the design, as you can see in the photos above, the knee armor goes to the shoulders, the shoulder armor goes to the heels — it's that signature parts-recycling spirit on full display, cleverly repurposing existing pieces. On top of that, one extra runner's worth of new parts manages to create a design that looks quite different from the original Duel. And then they throw in the backpack from the 1/100 Launcher Strike and the bazooka from the 1/100 Gold Frame on top of that — truly the pinnacle of recycling.

If you look at the runner for the bazooka that came with the 1/100 Gold Frame, it's actually stamped as a bazooka for the Duel Gundam — so it seems like it wasn't the Gold Frame borrowing from the Duel, but rather the Gold Frame had borrowed it from the Duel in the first place. Either way, thanks to all this complex recycling and kitbashing, the design itself feels surprisingly fresh in its own way.

The overall articulation and characteristics of the kit are the same as the existing 1/100 Duel, with a standard ~90-degree range of motion and decent joint strength. However, one added downside is that the front skirt added for the Regen has a strangely narrow range of motion, which significantly limits how far the thighs can swing up. Even setting that aside, this is a fairly old 1/100 kit, so the leg articulation is on the limited side overall — keep in mind that pulling off a wide variety of action poses will be a bit of a challenge.

At ¥2500, the low price for the scale, easy assembly, colorful looks, and the flashy charm typical of variation kits are its strong points — beyond that, this isn't really a kit that'll wow you with any standout features. ^^; It's a kit that's fundamentally designed to be a casual, fun build, so it's a perfectly solid~~, no-fuss recommendation for beginner modelers who just want to enjoy the assembly and end up with a nice finished model. :-)
