Gundam Astray Red Frame Clear version

Kit Review

Straight build

This is the 1/100 Astray Red Frame Clear version limited edition, one of the clear versions released as a 2009 Asia exclusive. It seems like it was naturally put out to coincide with the release of the PG Astray — and the original kit, despite being a No Grade, already had really solid articulation. On top of that, the clear version also reinforced the joint strength that was a bit lacking before, so it's even better than ever!^^

That said, as you might already get a sense of from the review photos above, even though it's a clear version, there's something about it that feels a bit... off. Compared to other clear versions, it has this kind of washed-out look to it. The coloring just doesn't photograph well in terms of giving a sense of depth....

Thinking about it more carefully, I think the issue is that the suit's basic design concept is all about exposing the inner frame on the outside — so even as a clear version, you don't really get that satisfying see-through effect where the internals show through. And since the frame is a strong, vivid primary red, the outlines of the frame don't really stand out clearly either. Anyway, I thought it would look amazing as a clear version, but it doesn't quite have that dazzling, jewel-like quality I was hoping for.

On the plus side, the outer white armor is done in a smoky semi-transparent material instead of fully clear, which does give the armor panels a decent sense of depth. Either way, the 1/100 Astray kit itself is already a well-known gem of a kit for the price, and if you're after a unique clear-version take on it, it's definitely worth recommending.
