Strike Gundam

Kit Review

The Strike Gundam has been released in big scale as a 1/60 RD (Real Detail).
Basically, the 1/60 Strike Gundam can be described as an enlarged copy of the existing no-grade 1/100 Strike Gundam. The proportions, parts layout, joint structure, articulation — pretty much everything is either identical or just slightly expanded in parts count. Of course, the 1/100 Strike was already a pretty decent kit, so the 1/60 being an enlarged copy of it still results in a decent quality product.

The color accuracy is a little more complete than the 1/100, with color separation carried through to even the smallest nooks and crannies. The articulation is so similar to the 1/100 it's almost indistinguishable.. Normally, big-scale kits tend to have weak joints that can't support their own weight, but this 1/60 Strike Gundam has a low parts count, is lightweight, and the joints are reasonably solid. It holds poses far better than PGs, which can struggle to hold a pose or lean over because they're too heavy and have overly complex joints. That's something I really appreciate — joints that are snug and well-fitted without being loose, just right for holding the size together.

With such a large scale, even a simple action pose gives off a real sense of power and dynamism. The ankle articulation seems slightly improved over the 1/100, so ground contact during action poses is good too. When holding the beam rifle, you can plug the peg on the grip into the palm of the hand, and it stays firmly in place without tilting or falling out. That's just the kind of thoughtful touch you'd expect for a big-scale kit.

True to the series name "1/60 Real Detail," this kit has quite a few areas where the detail has been quietly improved over the 1/100 Strike Gundam. The joint areas around the neck, shoulders, wrists, knees, and ankles, as well as the inner skirt armor and inner shield detail, are all more finely molded than the 1/100. (See photos)
Well, I mean.. it's supposed to be a big 1/60 scale kit — if they'd just released a straight-up enlarged copy with no structural changes, they would've caught some flak for it ^^;;

I think the biggest selling point of this kit is probably the value for money. For ¥3500 — which seems pretty cheap for the scale — you get a large, well-detailed, nicely proportioned hero Gundam. It's even cheaper than the MG Aile Strike.. Sure, there's no inner frame, but it holds its own standing next to PGs without any shame.

One minor downside — the hands, which are actually pretty naturally rendered with those double-jointed knuckles.. the finger joints do pop off pretty easily. But the hands look good enough that I'll let it slide ^^

Overall.. great value for money, excellent proportions, solid joints, improved detail — this is one of those kits that was just a pleasure to build.
