Justice Gundam

Kit Review

Straight build + partial painting + panel lining

Justice Gundam has been released in 1/100 scale. The SEED Gundams tend to come with a lot of gear to begin with, but Justice's flight backpack (with the somewhat odd name FATUM-00) is probably the biggest backpack of the bunch. Which means the back is heavy, and balancing it is a bit of a pain.

The backpack is huge, sure, but when you flip it up into flight mode and spread the wings out, it does look pretty impressive and voluminous. The one issue is that the wings can't quite support themselves when spread, so they tend to droop down a little instead of staying perfectly horizontal. That said, action poses in this flight mode configuration look pretty cool, I have to say.

The joint articulation itself is neither loose nor stiff and moves pretty well, but the ankle articulation is quite limited. They bend forward and back just fine, but sideways movement is almost nonexistent, which makes it hard to pull off a stable wide-legged stance. The biggest problem is that the feet need to naturally splay outward in a figure-eight shape, but they're fixed straight in line with the legs and won't spread out properly. On top of that, the backpack is big and heavy, so there are a lot of limitations when it comes to striking a cool pose.

The molded color is a pinkish tone that might look similar to Aegis Gundam at first glance, but it's actually far more refined than Aegis. Compared to Aegis Gundam — which earned the harsh nickname "defective sausage" — Justice's molded color has a nice matte, fine-grained feel to it. However, with the wings, just like Freedom Gundam, only one side of each wing gets a seal, so straight out of the box only half of the design color is represented. The center of the wings is supposed to be white on both front and back, but they only included seals for one side. The seals themselves are matte and good quality, but sticking them on just one side makes it look half-finished.. So just like I did with Freedom, I painted the front and back center sections of both wings white.

There's something a bit puzzling about the color accuracy on the beam rifle.. For starters, the beam rifle itself is completely identical to the Freedom Gundam's. But while Freedom's kit at least let you put a sticker on the blue stripe part of the barrel, Justice's kit doesn't include any beam rifle sticker at all. If they'd never included one to begin with it'd be one thing, but giving it to one kit and not the other just feels lousy. -_- So once again I had no choice but to painstakingly mix a similar shade of purple and do some partial painting. The pink sections inside the white shoulder parts weren't represented either, so I painted those at the same time.

The back-heavy weight makes posing a challenge, and the ankle limitations hold back the articulation, but... the base molded color looks great, and when you spread those wings out wide it really does feel pretty striking. If you're a fan of Justice Gundam's design, this is a reasonably solid kit, but it's probably not something I'd recommend to everyone across the board. ^^;
