Saviour Gundam

Kit Review

Straight build + panel lining + partial painting

The Saviour Gundam — the mobile suit of fan-favorite Athrun Zala — has gotten the HG treatment.
This HG Saviour Gundam stands out as an exceptional kit even within the SEED HG series, which is already known for its quality.

First off, the molded colors come out rich and deep, though reds tend to look a bit muddy in digital camera shots, so the colors here don't quite do the actual kit justice. The real thing looks much better, so keep that in mind! Also, this kit is uniquely good at blending seals with the rest of the build. The white areas on the body and the white and yellow parts on the wings are all handled with seals, but they go on so seamlessly and cleanly that at a glance it almost looks like proper color separation. The seal material itself is decent quality too, which takes a lot of the pressure off partial painting ^^;

That said, the color scheme is pretty complex, so there are still a fair number of spots that need partial painting to match the official colors. Of course, as you can see from the snap-fit shots, even with just the base molded colors and seals, the kit already captures about 90% of the intended look. It's clean and nicely detailed. The Saviour Gundam's proportions are also really solid. The earlier Chaos and Gaia honestly didn't do much for me proportions-wise, but this one has a design and kit shape that I genuinely think looks great.

Like recent SEED HGs, the joint strength is very solid — it stands firm even with the weight on its back. It holds whatever pose you put it in, and thanks to the transformation gimmick, the leg articulation goes all the way to a full bend, so kneeling poses are no problem at all. The MA transformation is relatively straightforward, but the end result looks pretty good.

As for minor downsides.. the beam saber stored in the shoulder is a bit loose and tends to fall out. That shoulder beam saber and the shield keep getting in each other's way, making shield placement a bit of a hassle. And the wing connection on the back-mounted weapons feels a little loose too.

Personally, I think this might be the most satisfying kit to build among the Destiny HGs. Excellent color separation and seal work, joints that are both sturdy and highly articulated, top-notch proportions.. and a transformation gimmick on top of all that. It's the kind of kit that makes you go "oh, hello there" once you're done building it. It feels a bit more special compared to the Zaku Warrior, which is starting to feel a little overdone — and maybe it's because it's Athrun Zala's machine, but it really does feel like extra care went into it. ^^
