Abyss Gundam

Kit Review

Straight build + panel lining + partial painting

The blue-toned Abyss Gundam has gotten the HG treatment. I personally love blue, and the molded colors of blue, sky blue, and white blend together really nicely — it's a great-looking kit. The color separation is pretty well done too, so there aren't that many spots needing partial painting compared to other HG kits. The one exception is the Beam Lance — since it's a spear-shaped weapon, you basically need to paint almost the entire thing to get the white and red sections right. For the Beam Lance paint job, I followed the textbook approach: surfacer → base white → masking → red → brush painting the other sections → panel lining with a Rotring pen.

The Abyss Gundam's biggest feature is definitely those massive shoulder shields. They're large weapon units with 3 beam cannons on the inside and 2 protruding ones on the outside, and when you transform into MA mode, they wrap around the front of the body like a clamshell. These structures move on multiple joints with a pretty wide range of motion, and when fully opened, you can pull off some seriously dynamic action poses.

Like other recent SEED kits, it has decent articulation and appropriately stiff joints, so it holds its poses well even with those big shoulder structures. That said, since so much weight is concentrated in the upper body, if you don't balance it right, gravity will do its thing and it'll topple forward or backward.

Transforming into MA mode is pretty straightforward — just fold up the shoulder structures, bend the legs a bit, and rotate the backpack weapons into position and you're done. The front of the MA mode looks kind of like an Asshimar, or maybe Grendizer's spaceship, with that round shellfish-like shape. A stand is included so you can display it properly.

Overall it's a clean, quality kit, and if you like the design, it's definitely worth picking up without hesitation. ^^
