Tomy Zoids MSS

RPZ-07 Shield Liger Mk-II

Kit Review

Straight build

The first variation kit has arrived in Tomy Tec's 1/144 Zoids lineup — it's the Shield Liger Mk-II, the successor to the Shield Liger. Compared to the original, it features a different molded color and adds a large twin beam cannon on the back. On top of that, Tomy Tec's Zoids version comes with a bonus matte gold coating applied to the claws, teeth, and beam cannon areas. ^^

Since the base body is the same, the overall construction is identical to the previous kit — but the newly added twin beam cannons are well-reproduced, complete with rubber tubing, a left/right spread gimmick, and angle-adjustable joints. Just like the regular Shield Liger, the various cylinders on the legs and body are neatly painted, and combined with the matte gold-coated special parts, the whole thing comes together as a variation that feels noticeably more premium overall.

One thing that's different from the previous kits is that the diorama base, which used to be included as a bonus, is missing here... I thought it came with every kit in the line, but it seems like they decided not to include it with variation kits — probably to keep costs down. A bit of a shame, honestly.

And yet, even with the diorama base gone, the price actually comes in at ¥3,500 — ¥300 more than the Shield Liger. That's likely because several runners have been coated, which adds to the production cost and pushes the price up.

That said, it still has all the charm of a Tomy Tec Zoids kit — small but packed with detail — so while your eyes and fingers might get a little tired putting all those tiny parts together, the colors, proportions, and articulation once it's snapped together are fantastic. It's nice to see them go the extra mile with all that coating rather than just releasing a straight variation. ^^ Either way, Zoids fans have got another great item to hunt down. :-)
