00 Raiser

Kit Review

Following the 1/100 00 Gundam, a combo pack of 00 + 0 Raiser = 00 Raiser was released simultaneously with the 1/100 0 Raiser. This combo pack is simply the existing 1/100 00 Gundam and 0 Raiser bundled together with absolutely no changes, so for a detailed review of each unit, please refer to the 1/100 00 Gundam review and the 1/100for reference.

That said, maybe they felt a plain combo pack wasn't quite enough... so they threw in the Celestial Being exclusive action base that was set to release in early 2009. The Celestial Being exclusive action base is a little special — it's molded in clear green rather than the standard molded color, and when you add it all up, the total value of the contents comes out to...

1/100 00 Gundam (¥2800)
+ 1/100 0 Raiser (¥1600) + Celestial Being
exclusive action base (¥700) = ¥5100

— but it seems like ¥100 was knocked off as a discount, and it came out at a neat ¥5000. Bandai usually puts combo packs out at the honest combined price, but I guess they figured releasing it at ¥5100 would look a bit awkward. ^^;

Anyway, the individual units are the same as the existing kits, but once you combine them into the 00 Raiser, the presence is pretty impressive. The volume added to the sides and back gives it a seriously commanding silhouette. Thankfully, the joints on the 1/100 00 Gundam are generally solid enough to hold up without major issues, but the added weight does make it a bit harder to get good poses compared to just the 00 body on its own. The joint strength was plenty for the 00 by itself, but with all the 0 Raiser parts hanging off it, you can't help but wish the joints were just a little tighter. Still, thankfully the dedicated stand is included, so once you put it on the stand, the joint issue naturally takes care of itself.

Once you put it on the dedicated clear green Celestial Being stand, it looks absolutely fantastic. The 00 body itself is great quality, so whatever action pose you strike, it comes out dynamic and looking great. The grip strength in particular is something I really appreciate.

One thing to keep in mind when combining them — as mentioned in the 1/100 0 Raiser review — is that you need to make proper use of the locking pegs when attaching the 0 Raiser to the shoulders. It's explained pretty vaguely in the manual so you might miss it if you're not careful, but after inserting it into the hole on the shoulder, you need to pull it firmly forward until you hear a "click" — otherwise it'll fall right off the shoulder. If you just leave it plugged in loosely to the side of the shoulder, it'll drop right off, so watch out for that.

Anyway, this is a meaningful kit in that it lets you build the powerful 00 Raiser from the show in 1/100 scale, and for better or worse, since the 00 Gundam, 0 Raiser, and 00 Raiser have all been released as separate kits, you can just pick whichever one suits your taste. :-)
