Zaku High Mobility Surface Type (Egba)

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

This kit is the HG Zaku High Mobility Surface Type (Egba) released as a Club G (Premium Bandai) online exclusive. It's the Zaku that appears in the theatrical anime film "Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island." While some of the inner frame is reused from the HG Origin Zaku, all of the exterior parts are 100% newly sculpted.

With the exterior made up entirely of new parts, there's a lot of fresh design work applied throughout. It feels like a reinterpretation of the classic High Mobility Zaku in the Origin style. The angular skirts, chunky legs, the bayonet-equipped weapon, and the heat sword stored on the back — reminiscent of a heat rod — all come together to make for a really distinctive new design. The basic inner frame is nearly identical to the HG Origin Zaku, but thanks to the slide-extension gimmick on the lower knee joint, the knee articulation gets a nice upgrade.

For weapons, you get a machine gun with the rather lengthy name of "Type-G Improved Drum Magazine MS Machine Gun," along with a detachable bayonet for the underside. The bayonet can be mounted on the side skirt using a joint part. On top of that, the heat sword that stores in the backpack comes with both a stored-state part (gray) and a glowing-state part (yellow) included at the same time. The only minor annoyance is that there's just one handle, so you have to swap it between the two.

One thing to note — this unit is canonically supposed to have camouflage paint applied all over its body. It's included as waterslide decals, but between the poor decal quality and the insanely complex pattern, I really didn't want to go through that nightmare again and skipped it. T_T (HGUC Jegan Type-D Camouflage Ver. — see that review for reference) The decal pattern is ridiculously complicated on top of tearing easily and not sticking well, so I honestly can't recommend it unless you're a real pro. For camouflage patterns, just airbrushing it on would be way faster and look much better. Either way, it looks plenty pretty and eye-catching even without the camouflage, so you can pretty much treat the decals as optional.

All in all, a fresh and flashy new design with clean HG quality — I had a great time building this one from start to finish. Decals aside, it's a fantastic kit on its own merits, and I'd happily recommend it to any Gunpla fan. :-)
