This kit is the MG Gundam Astray Mirage Frame Second Issue, released as a Club G (Premium Bandai) online exclusive. Ever since the 1/100 Gundam Astray Mirage Frame Second Issuecame out in 2010, it's taken 15 years to finally get an MG version — and it comes with the kit's signature flashy color scheme and design taken up a notch.
The base frame and weapons are built on the MG Gundam Astray Red Framereleased via Club G, with four newly sculpted runners added on top. The frame color has been changed to pink, and a variety of new weapons have been added, giving it a very different feel from the original Astray. There are quite a few design changes from the original 1/100 as well — the fin rifle on the side of the shoulder is much larger and more elaborate, and the shape and layout of the forearms and backpack are completely different too.
Most notably, the transformation sequence into the quadruped Brute Mode has been significantly reworked. Unlike the 1/100 which simply bent the limbs to go on all fours, this version adds quite a few gimmicks for a more complex transformation — and the end result looks a lot more convincing for it. The one downside is that the front legs don't have enough support strength relative to the weight of the torso, so the front end tends to gradually sag out of position.
Since the base frame is the same as the existing MG Astray, it still delivers excellent articulation and solid joint strength. Even with the increased weapon loadout, the durability holds up well. The pilot figure has also been swapped out for Rondo Ghina Sahaku, and the seated cockpit figure has been updated to match.
So the Mirage Frame — which built up a quiet but devoted fanbase thanks to its one-of-a-kind visuals — has finally made it to MG. The base kit is over 15 years old at this point, but it still holds up pretty well even by today's standards. If the unique style appeals to you, or if you're an Astray fan, this is definitely one you won't want to pass up. :-)
