Xabungle 1/144

Blue Gale Xabungle Set 1

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the 1/144 Combat Mecha Xabungle Set 1, released as a Premium Bandai online exclusive. Following the HG Xabungle Type, and just like the earlier Vifam/Dragonar releases, this is a repackaged bundle of old kits. True to its 40-year-old origins, it's an old-school kit in every sense — you need to glue 100% of it together.

The set includes five old kits: Walker Gallia, Caprico Type, Sandvid Type, Gallop Type, and Trad 11 Type. The Walker Gallia comes with separation and transformation features, and the Caprico Type has a linked cylinder mechanism in the forearm. The Sandvid Type's multi-jointed arm is pulled off fairly convincingly with a lead wire and 24 individual joint parts — though since each segment moves on its own, getting them all lined up neatly is easier said than done. The Gallop Type and Trad 11 Type are on the smaller side, so their articulation is limited, but the detail is actually better than you'd expect.

Since this is a reissue of 40-year-old molds, it feels a bit awkward to judge it by today's standards. The overall lack of articulation is just something you have to accept, but joint strength is actually better than expected. The old-school detail has a surprisingly crisp quality to it, and there's a certain charming, nostalgic feel that's hard to dislike. That said, as you'd expect from aged molds, there are quite a few spots that need cleaning up as you build — worth keeping in mind.

Either way, the real value here is that these hard-to-find old kits have been reissued. It's tough to recommend to folks who aren't familiar with Xabungle, but for longtime fans, it's a perfect little time machine back to the romance of the '80s. :-)
