VF-31J Super Siegfried [Hayate]

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Seals

Alongside the VF-31J super pack kit, a combined kit bundling the super pack with the VF-31J Hayate was also released separately as the VF-31J Super Siegfried [Hayate]. Sometimes combined kits come with bonus parts or extra seals, but this one is simply the two kits packaged together with no special extras. The price also comes out to ¥7,400, which is just the straight sum of the VF-31J (¥5,200) and the super pack (¥2,200).

For a detailed review of the VF-31J super pack and the conversion process, please refer to the VF-31J Hayate Super Pack Review— and in this review, take a look at the appearance of each mode after the conversion to the Super Siegfried is complete. Just like past Macross super packs, this kit comes out looking noticeably more powerful than the normal version, which is great. That said, with the backpack added, the center of gravity on the Battroid shifts quite a bit toward the rear, so you'll need to lean it forward carefully to get it standing upright. On top of that, the VF-31 series already has poor foot contact with the ground, making it tricky to stand straight, and with the backpack added it's even harder to find the right balance on the feet. Still, the joint strength is the best of any Macross kit to date, so it's not too bad relatively speaking when it comes to holding poses. If an armored pack ever comes out, though, I'd imagine standing upright without a stand would be pretty much impossible.

The transformation process to GERWALK mode or Fighter mode is 100% identical to the normal version. In GERWALK mode, the added thigh armor makes it hard to spread the legs, so the proportions feel a bit less natural compared to the normal version. In Fighter mode as well, the bulkier thighs prevent the legs from lying completely flush against the body — there's a slight gap that's visible and doesn't look great aesthetically, but there doesn't seem to be much you can do about it.

Either way, this kit is significant simply for the fact that we now have a Super Siegfried for the VF-31J from Macross Delta — it's one I'd recommend to anyone who doesn't already own the VF-31J kit, or to those who do but want a fully independent Super Siegfried of their own. Sure, the bigger size makes posing a bit more finicky, but compared to the super Valkyries of the past, the joints are far more stable, and that alone makes it easy to recommend. :-)
