Gundam Base MG

GBK-20 Gundam Astray

Kit Review

Straight build + waterslide decals + stickers

This kit is the MG GBK-20 Gundam Astray, released as a Gundam Base Korea exclusive to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Gundam Base Korea. It's based on the MG Gundam Astray Red Frame Kai— said to be the best-selling kit in Korea — with parts from multiple kits combined into one package. (Note: the official product name of the standard MG Red Frame does not include "Kai") On the back, the Destiny R Silhouette from the Club G release of the MG Destiny Impulse Gundam Rhas been applied.

The main body is fundamentally based on the MG Red Frame Kai, but the shoulder and foot sculpts are taken from the MG Gundam Astray Blue Frame 2nd R (Revise). The weapons are also a combined package — the Red Frame's Gerbera Straight and Tiger Pierce alongside the Blue Frame 2nd R's Armor Schneider, all included together. The weapons can be stored on the sides of the thighs using the joint gimmick, and the blades of the Gerbera Straight and Tiger Pierce are molded in clear red.

The Destiny R Silhouette uses the same sculpt as the one included in the MG Destiny Impulse Gundam R, just with a different molded color — it's also identical to the color variant MG Impulse Gundam Blanche. The Wolfsbane long-range beam cannon gimmick detaches and works the same way, and thanks to its solid hold, you can use it without much stress.

On top of that, the MG Destiny Gundam
Extreme Blast
Mode
released as a special edition back in 2007 also contributes its Wings of Light to this kit. The front and back have different reflections and color tones, and the surface has a coating that shows rainbow-like reflections depending on the angle of light. Worth noting — the connection between the clear parts you add to attach it to the main body is pretty weak, so it's much easier to glue them together with bond first before plugging them in. Also, the connection between the Wings of Light and the main body is weaker than you'd expect, so it can come loose pretty easily if you don't seat it just right — definitely worth practicing a few times. A black action base is also included, making this quite a deluxe kit all around.

So while there are no new sculpts here, this special limited edition does a great job of combining parts from multiple kits into an impressive visual package. The quality of both the MG Astray body and the Destiny R Silhouette is solid, and the combination delivers a smooth build experience with stable overall quality. That said, the backpack is large and heavy, so you'll need to balance the center of gravity carefully if you want it to stand on its own. Since the kit really only shows its full value with the Wings of Light attached, you're probably better off displaying it on the included stand for a stable setup.

This kit also includes Korea exclusive waterslide decals, featuring a design based on the deconstructed characters of "건베" (Gundam Base) along with a Korean-script "Astray" decal as a highlight. The decal sheet isn't huge and the quality is decent enough, so even beginners should be able to apply them without too much trouble. That said, Bandai Korea's insistence on the "Astray" romanization in Korean still feels a bit awkward. -_-

Anyway, this is a limited edition that Gunpla fans in Korea will find quite welcome on multiple fronts — though the price of ₩96,000 (¥8,000) does feel a bit steep. It seems like the Wings of Light are largely responsible for pushing the price up. Still, Wings of Light compatible with MG kits are pretty rare, so being able to get your hands on a set this time around could actually be a selling point in itself. If the style appeals to you, this is a meaningful limited edition worth picking up without hesitation. :-)

* On a side note, not only is this the 20th anniversary of Gundam Base Korea — it's also exactly 20 years since Dalong.net officially launched. It's meaningful in many ways that we've somehow been around for 20 years together, but since this was a Gundam Base exclusive, I wasn't originally planning to rush out a review. However, overseas visitors who have difficulty getting their hands on Korea-exclusive releases kept reaching out via email and DMs requesting one, so I went ahead and put it together — hope it's helpful. (70% of Dalong.net's visitors come from overseas IPs, which is also why I try to write my reviews in a way that translates well automatically.)
