RRR 1/100

L-Gaim Mark-II Heav Metal Coating Ver.

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

This kit is the RRR L-Gaim Mk-II Heavy Metal Coating Ver., released as a Premium Bandai online exclusive. It's a plated version of the RRR L-Gaim Mk-IIthat was released as a standard release. There's no new tooling — it's a straight-up plated parts release.

So the articulation and accessories are all identical to the original, and for this review you really just need to take a good look at the plated surfaces that have been added. A semi-gloss Extra Finish-style coating has been applied in four colors, and even the frame has been plated. As a result, 70% of the included runners are plated parts runners, making this one of the highest plating ratios and best quality finishes among plated kits. And despite having a record-breaking number of plated runners, the price came in at less than double that of the base kit.

The original kit from 2007 was ¥5,500, and the first run of the plated version released in 2014 was only ¥9,200. It went up to ¥10,000 with the 2025 reissue, but even so, this has to be one of the best value-for-money plated kits ever. Lately, plated kits have been known to slap a coating on just two or three runners and still charge nearly triple the price. For four different plating colors plus a plated frame, the price increase is really quite modest.

That said, since the base kit is from 2007, it does feel a little dated by 2025 reissue standards. Assembly is a bit tricky, and the plated surfaces on the frame make the fit tighter than usual. On the flip side, the reduced play in the joints from the plating actually firms up what used to be loose joint strength, so everything locks in solidly from head to toe — which is a nice bonus.

So here we have a plated kit that delivers a massive amount of plated surfaces at the scale of an MG Sazabi, yet comes in at a reasonable price. It doesn't have the clean, polished feel of a modern kit, but if you're an L-Gaim fan or just love large-scale plated kits, there's definitely enough here to keep you happy. :-)
