Super Robot War HG

Huckebein Mk-III

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

This kit is the Huckebein Mk-III released as part of Bandai's Super Robot Wars HG series. Some of the inner frame and weapon parts are reused from the Huckebein Mk-II, but nearly all of the exterior armor parts feature brand-new sculpts, giving it a design that's similar to the Mk-II yet completely different at the same time.

Since the inner frame and overall kit structure are the same, the general build quality feels very similar to the HG Huckebein Mk-II. It's a clean, high-quality HG with excellent articulation, joint strength, and color separation. On top of that, using the included stand lets you pull off some convincing Multi-Trace Missile launch/deploy poses as well as Fang Slasher launch poses. Overall, posing is easy and everything holds together well, making this a top-tier mecha action plastic model kit.

Compared to the Kotobukiya Huckebein Mk-III released back in 2005, this one feels a bit smaller and more slender. With a 19-year gap between them, the articulation, joint strength, and parts stability are in a completely different league. That said, the Kotobukiya version still shows pretty decent parts breakdown and proportions for a 2005 kit.

So with Katoki Hajime's Huckebein design — the man who essentially shaped 21st-century Bandai Gunpla — finally getting the Bandai HG treatment instead of Kotobukiya, it really feels like it's found its rightful home. Back in the day, Bandai apparently took issue with it looking too similar to Gundam, which made things difficult for Kotobukiya when it came to releasing plastic model kits. (Though honestly, both Gunpla and the Huckebein are Katoki Hajime designs anyway...) Either way, now that it's out under Bandai's quality-guaranteed HG lineup, this should be a very satisfying kit for anyone who's been waiting for a more up-to-date Huckebein plastic model. :-)
